About Plastic Free Cayman

Plastic Free Cayman is a dedicated community-driven organization committed to preserving the pristine beauty of our Cayman Islands. We are passionate about reducing plastic pollution and creating a sustainable future for generations to come.

We believe that every action, no matter how small, contributes to a significant impact. By working together, we can create a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable Cayman Islands for everyone.

Our mission is to inspire and empower individuals, businesses, and government to adopt plastic-free lifestyles and practices. Through education, awareness, and collaborative efforts, we aim to eliminate single-use plastics from our island and protect our precious marine ecosystem.

Plastic Free Cayman was established in 2017 and has held monthly cleanups since the beginning. We have removed over 10,000lbs of trash from our beaches.

What is the problem?

The Cayman Islands are renowned for our crystal-clear waters and pristine beaches, but we are facing a growing environmental crisis: plastic pollution. This once-miraculous material has become a pervasive threat to our marine life, ecosystems, and the overall health of our island home.

Plastic, designed for durability, takes centuries to decompose. When it breaks down, it doesn't disappear; it transforms into microplastics, tiny particles that infiltrate our oceans, soil, and even the air we breathe. These microplastics are ingested by marine animals, disrupting the food chain and ultimately impacting human health.

Beyond the marine environment, plastic waste clogs our landfill, contributes to greenhouse gas emissions, and leaches harmful chemicals into our soil.

Plastic Free Cayman was born out of a deep love for our island and a commitment to protecting its natural beauty for future generations. We believe that every individual has the power to make a difference, and by working together, we can create a plastic-free Cayman Islands.

Our mission is to:

  • Educate the community about the devastating impacts of plastic pollution
  • Inspire and empower individuals to reduce their plastic consumption
  • Advocate for policies that support a circular economy and reduce plastic waste
  • Protect our marine life and ecosystems

By joining us, you are not just helping to clean up our island; you are investing in a healthier, more sustainable future for everyone.
